Don't quire get what you are getting at ? A rather garbled , out of context argument , from Garcia ? I guess this in on 'Might as Well' train?
The band at this point was pretty damn poor, but even later when them were grossing lots, the money bag had lots of big leaks in it ; theirs was a real case of "trickle down" . I suspect Garcia is irritated by the selfish "music should be free", "people's music ", people that dogged that tour .
I can't remember exactly, the quote from the movie, where the promoter, relates that "activists" charges in his office and demanded that the show be free and that they should get a percentage of the proceeds...
You see a clip of Garcia trying to address the crowd , and not having much luck . Another part where Weir, defending the Canadian police, "The cops were boss man" or the like .
I always liked the Dead for not just blindly playing the cool, counterculture heros, and standing behind "The Man", when those forces were behaving responsibly , and criticizing the "People " , when they were not .
Garcia does sound a little the fool, here, but in context of what went down on the tour , it is more comprehensible .

Me too. Garcia in particular always seemed a little too smart to completely buy into the simplistic “power to the people/stick it to the man/something for nothing” rhetoric of the time.

Me three.
Context is indeed everything where viewing this Train video is concerned. The Music Should Be Free thing was etremely strong at this point n time, positioning musicians at a really odd angle to their fan base.
I'm not sure he's giving a lecture on trickle down economics as much as he's attempting to explain the difference between Gross Revenue and Net Revenue.
Plus you gotta remember the (no doubt) idiot who got him going is off camera, and we have no idea what he or she said. I don't think Jerry looks bad here at all.

" Garcia does sound a little the fool, here,"

I don't think so. They weren't making shit then. Just enough to keep playing and getting high in those days. You have to remember that even though they were living up where you have to be a MILLIONAIRE to live now it wasn't that way then. And they always kept pouring money back into the beast in better sound etc and they always compensated their crew and staff WELL. Not at the very beginning but it sounds like the more they made the more everyone made for the most part. Health benefits? Come on! I don't begrudge them one bit for finally getting to cash it in good in the late 80's. The tie thing is pretty lame considering he didn't wear one but for the most part what the hell? When they were at the height of the touch explosion they were still selling me tickets ( me as in everyone of course ) for less than other big names and even with shorter more predicitable setlists they were still playing longer than most and almost always delivered something interesting, no matter what Cliff says. I wouldn't trade a cent of it. Of course I didn't do the tour thing, plenty of shows in the Bay. ANd of course I missed the last three years being up here. At the time it bummed me out but I think now im glad i missed the big decline.

woah tangent huh?

Well JOTS, I agree with what you are saying, and I don't really see how what I said in the first post disagrees with what you are saying(?) Perhaps the my word choice, "fool", is the problem . To clarify, I agree with the gist of what he is saying, in the clip, but it is not him at his most lucid, and some of this is the anger at the bullshit they had to deal with, not with the promoters, but with the crowds, and self-righteous "people's music " types .
If more people who invoke "trickle down" practiced it like the Dead, things would be better, for sure . They were generous , to the point of being almost being played for chumps . So despite me sounding a little the fool here, I think we are mostly in agreement .

gotcha. Well I think he was in kind of a heated coversation. I guess there aren't too many Garcia clips showing him worked up and confrontational huh? That other clip where he's announcing the free show it seems he's clearly annoyed too.

and imo trickle down only works when the top aren't a bunch of greedy mo-fo's which sadly you don't see too often. USED to be that way more

Have you been keeping track? I'd like to know, in all seriousness, how many "new handles" have you stimulated from our resident bottom dwelling butt muncher? It's a great many, I am sure, and the degree to which one is occupied dreaming up new names, new emails, registering, and so on and so forth, well, I think it safe to say, is time NOT spent doing less productive things. And for that service, you no doubt deserve an award. On the other hand, I seem to have been completely ignored by the BDBM of late, and yet, strangely, it's not clear to me whether I should be feeling the snub, or reveling in it...

These are the true forum rules, accept no substitutes:

Rule one:
People who tell you they won’t take any shit are WITHOUT EXCEPTION the same people who love to dish it out.

Rule two:
People who pride themselves on telling it like it is will WITHOUT EXCEPTION absolutely hate it when you try to do the same.

Rule three:

Hey JC--actually, it's been pretty darn good around here for quite a few months; I think largely because there are too many of "us" for it to really matter, and if anything, the times folks do slip up and "feed them", it ends up being amusing, or easily ignored if you prefer. I stay clear, generally, but have no problem either way as I just don't see there really being a need to have rules of any kind (complete reversal of my original stance here!!) once we reached a civilized critical mass.

And by no means was I suggesting Rob do ANYTHING different; ie, I just think it's a sign of the Troll's fear and loathing of Rob that he has assumed so many names to tack on some meaningless drivel to one or another of Rob's posts...I find it almost better than TV.

Jody I don’t know how often you feel compelled to check out what is posted here. Myself I am addicted. I know you love the music - a fact I truly believe to be a given amongst us. Who cares what year sounds best – let’s talk about it in a civilized and non confrontational way. Many of us have something to share no matter if we are just turning on to it ( I envy those ‘juniors’ in a big way ) , or old-timers who saw them way back in the day with Pigpen, or the many like me who came aboard during the oft maligned eighties, etc….

This ‘same diatribe drivel’ you mention bothers me too, but we can do one thing to blow it away – keep talking the good talk. There is much to impart. We can listen to the archived recordings and we can bitch all we want. But we are truly blessed. That is forever beyond dispute.

A short small For Instance – there are many who dislike Brent – but we can appreciate their impute because they are one of Us. peace, Dan

I agree with Dudely Dead. The media and even worse heads themselves try to put the band in whatever context they feel fits them. Because the very nature of the the band was abstract and did not force their views on their fans. you have a very vacuous place for people to inveigh their thoughts and opinions. Some people think Jerry is a messiah, while others fitter around with more grounded concepts. The more opn the book, the more messy it becomes. The U.s Blues is great by the way thanks
